PS 163's Green Team

Our Green Team!

Managing Waste in the US | Historic New England

We are excited to welcome everyone back to school.  A new school year means new opportunities. It’s the perfect time to get involved and make a difference.  We are happy to continue our Green Team this year.  Our Green Team consists of 29 students and 3 staff members.   We are planning some exciting Green Team projects, including the continuation of our plastic free lunch days, our climate actions days and continuing our classroom inspections!

Thank you to those students who volunteered to be a part of our Green Team!

We plan to make this year our greenest one yet!

PS 163's First Climate Action Day on November 19th:

Our focus was on Waste and we shared the new GOOS BOX's (“Good on the other side”) we created!  These boxes were made from all recycled materials that would have been thrown in the trash.  A GOOS BOX was placed on every floor ready for whenever anyone needs scrap paper. We asked that everyone place any paper they no longer need (even if one side is used) in the box to eliminate waste together!

2023 school waste profile. 34% curbside recyclables, 49% organics suitable for composting, 15% other, 2% other divertable materials
New York City schools generate more than 40,000 tons of waste per year. Of all the “trash” produced in a school building, a lot of it can be recycled, composted, or reused.
The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Waste Characterization Study found that 85% of waste generated in schools can be recycled, composted, or responsibly diverted from landfills.
NYC schools are crucial to helping our city reduce waste sent to landfills. Our office supports all school stakeholder (students, teachers, custodial staff, administrators) in composting and recycling.
